Spam Filtering

Spam Filtering software information
Spam Assassin filters out junk email.

Junk email, commonly known as Spam is undesired email, sent in bulk, usually containing advertisements or other unwanted email. NetLingo has an extensive defintion of Spam. Spam email can become a problem if it is not filtered out.

Our email accounts are filtered by software called 'Spam Assassin' which  tests emails to detect spam, and adds *****SPAM***** to the subject line. Outlook Express mail rules can be set up to move these emails to another folder.

Outlook Express - message rules can be easily set up:
  1. In Outlook Express, find the drop down menu at the top called Tools.
  2. Click Tools and drag down to Message Rules, then over to Mail.
  3. A new window Message Rules should appear, where you can click on New.
  4. From the first selection area, choose Where subject line contains specific words.
  5. From the second selection area choose, Move to specified folder.
  6. In the third selection area, click on Contains specific words.
  7. In the new window 'Type specific words', enter *****SPAM*****, click add, then OK
  8. In the third selection window, click specified, choose Deleted items and click Ok.
  9. In selection area #4, you can enter a title for this rule, then click Ok to complete this rule, and Ok to exit Message Rules.

With this rule, emails filtered by Spam Assasin will be moved to the Deleted Items folder where you can review if any are useful before deleting them.
